Google is constantly working to improve the Google Home experience, rolling out major updates to the app every few weeks. These updates usually add new features or fix some important bugs that still exist. With its first update in 2026, Google is taking things a step further by making home automation in Google Home even more advanced.
Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home and Gemini for Home, announced the addition of 20 initial conditions and actions in the Google Home app. This will allow you to create more complex and detailed smart home automation.
For example, as Google executives highlighted, you can now create automations that automatically dim the lights by 50% if your TV is playing media. Similarly, you can create automation to arm the security system at 10pm every day.
Here are the complete release notes for Google Home’s latest round of enhancements:
-
Control the volume on your media device: for example “When the volume is 50…”
-
Control playback on your media device (playing, no playing, pausing, buffering): for example “When the speaker is paused…” or “If the TV is playing…”
-
Set the brightness to a specific level: for example “When brightness is above 80%”
-
Check smart appliance status* (stopped, running, paused, error): for example “While the washing machine is running…” or “If there is an error…”
-
Turning a specific device on or off: for example “…turn off the coffee machine”
-
Arming the security system (not yet disarming): e.g. “…arming the security system”
-
Opening and closing the curtains: for example “…open the living room curtains”
-
Set the robot vacuum to pause, resume or dock: for example “…pause vacuum” or “…dock vacuum”
-
Start, stop, resume or pause smart appliances*: for example “…turn on the coffee machine”, “…stop the washing machine” or “…pause the dryer”
-
Control the light effect on smart bulbs (stop light only): for example “…stop light effect”
*Supported on select devices such as washers, dryers, and coffee machines. This is currently not supported on smart ovens, robot vacuums and robot mops.
Essentially, you can now build routines with triggers related to media playback, volume levels, and whether smart appliances are running, paused, or stopped. As for the actions, you can turn on or turn off certain devices, resume or start/stop smart appliances, etc.
More triggers and actions will be coming soon
Anish said Google will release more actions and triggers in the next few weeks.
New home automation triggers and actions are available as part of Google Home 4.6.55.1 for Android. Since this is a gradual rollout, it may take a while to appear on your phone.
