Google is freeing Wear OS earthquake alerts from phones

Earthquake Alerts remain one of Android’s most useful safety features. It can alert millions of users seconds before an earthquake occurs, giving you those crucial seconds to move to safety or prepare. In July 2025, Google expanded earthquake alerts to Wear OS. Now, the feature gets even better with the introduction of key improvements.

Until now, earthquake alerts would only appear on Wear OS watches if the watch was paired and connected to your phone. With the Google Play Services v26.07 update, Google will improve this behavior to ensure earthquake alerts on Wear OS work even when the watch is not paired to the phone (via Droid-Life).

It’s a small change, but it immediately makes Wear OS earthquake alerts more useful, especially if you tend not to take your phone with you when running or doing other sports activities.

Although not stated, the alert will probably only be received on watches that have cellular connectivity. Bluetooth-only watches may still rely on a paired cell phone to receive alerts. It’s also unclear whether users will need to manually enable this feature on their watches or whether it will be enabled automatically with a Play Services update.

Google’s earthquake warning system could be a lifesaver

On phones, Google’s earthquake warning system uses built-in sensors, such as accelerometers, to detect vibrations. The device then sends anonymous data to Google servers. When multiple phones in the same area detect tremors, the company estimates the magnitude of the earthquake and its epicenter and quickly sends an alert to nearby users.

If only a light shaking occurs, Google will send an “Alert Alert.” But if the situation is more serious, “Take Alert Action” will pop up, which will override your phone’s Do Not Disturb, volume, and notification settings to get your attention. This will trigger a red screen on your phone with a loud alarm and safety instructions. Wear OS implementations should also work the same way.

The new Play services version started rolling out on February 23, 2026. But because these are usually gradual releases, it may take a while to hit your phone.
