How to turn off your Android phone or iPhone

Turning off your smartphone is the best way to fix malfunctioning apps or apply setting changes.

While you might think there is only one way to turn off an Android phone or iPhone, there are several ways depending on the model and software.

We outline all the conventional methods for turning off your phone, whether you’re using an Android phone on Android 16, a Samsung device running One UI 8, or an iPhone with iOS 26.

Why should you turn off your smartphone?

Turning off your phone will refresh its memory. You should do this regularly to fix memory leaks and resolve minor glitches.

While restarting your device will fix most minor glitches, turning off your phone will perform a complete system reset.

If you find that your phone is running slower than before, turn off your device and then restart it.

Technically, turning off your phone also stops all background processes, which can save your battery in an emergency.

In more extreme situations, routinely turning off your device can also reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your data, as the device can no longer connect to the network or applications.

On many modern Android phones (especially the Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel), long-pressing the power button may launch a voice assistant (such as Bixby or Google Gemini) instead of the power menu.

How to turn off your Google Pixel smartphone

On Samsung Galaxy smartphones, pressing the power button activates Bixby. To turn off your phone, here’s what you’ll do:

Another quick way to turn off your Samsung phone is to swipe down twice from the top of the touch screen. You’ll see turn off icon in the top right corner. Select it and follow the on-screen instructions to turn off your phone.

How to turn off your Motorola phone

Motorola phones are among the easiest to turn off. Here’s what you’ll do:

1. Press and hold strength And volume up button.

2. Choose Turn off icon from the pop-up box to turn off your smartphone.

Alternatively, swipe down twice from the top of the home screen to see the power off button. Select it, then follow the instructions above to turn off your smartphone.

These instructions can help you turn off most of the mobile devices on the market. If you have a device from another brand, here’s what you can try:

1. Stand power button and it volume up or volume down buttonand follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Press power button alone and follow the on-screen instructions.

How to turn off OnePlus smartphone

Similar to other devices, turning off your phone may prompt a digital assistant. Here’s how to turn it off without opening the digital assistant:

1. Press and hold power button And volume up button.

2. Scroll down to Turn off.

   

You can make it easier by turning off your OnePlus phone by replacing the digital assistant with the power menu. To do this:

1. Open your device Arrangement.

2. Knock Accessibility & convenience.

3. Scroll down to Other and select Power Button.

   

   

4. Knock Press and hold on power button > Power Menu. This will replace your digital assistant in the power menu when you hold the power button.

   

   

How to turn off iPhone

Turning off an iPhone is as easy as turning off an Android device. Here’s what you’ll do:

1. Press and hold power button and it volume up button.

2. Slide your finger across turn off slider to turn off your phone.

If one of the physical buttons isn’t working on your iPhone, here’s how to turn it off:

1. Navigate to Settings application.

2. Choose General.

3. Scroll down and select it Close.

4. Slide your finger across turn off slider.

   

   

Another way to turn off your Apple device is to ask Siri. After saying the voice command, you will see a confirmation box on your screen. Respond with “Yes” to turn off your phone.

In iOS 18 and iOS 26, Control Center lets you access the power button in the top right corner.

To access Control Center, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen.

What to do if your device is damaged?

If your device is damaged, the best way to access the device shutdown feature is to use the Accessibility menu shortcut or voice command.

To do this, open your device Arrangement and tap Accessibility to open the Accessibility menu. Alternatively, use a voice command to turn it off. For Google Assistant/Gemini, use “Hey Google, turn off my phone.”

When turning off your phone doesn’t help

Most phones, whether Android or iPhone, can be turned off using the above method.

However, if turning off your phone does not solve the problem you are experiencing, force restart your phone or, as a last resort, factory reset your Android device or iOS device.
