Google plans to completely replace Google Assistant with Gemini. This is a reality that most of us have learned to accept since the tech giant confirmed it in March this year.
Google says that Gemini is the future, although that future seems a little behind schedule.
Gemini officially replaces Google Assistant, here’s what that means for you
Google Assistant is almost retired this year
When Google first announced that they would ‘upgrade’ all users from Google Assistant to Gemini, it said that they would do it before 2025 was out.
“Over the coming months, we’re moving more users on mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini; and later this year, classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices or available for new downloads in mobile app stores,” Google said in March.
The year 2025 is coming to an end in less than two weeks, and instead of hitting the gas pedal, Google seems to be hitting the brakes.
In a new support post, the Search giant announced that it is softening its transition plans (via Android Authority).
More information will come next year
We adjusted our previously announced timeline to ensure we provide a smooth transition, and will continue our efforts to upgrade Assistant users to Gemini on mobile devices through 2026.
The tech giant also indicated that it will have more to share about its plans in the coming months, suggesting that we won’t have a clear picture of the post-Google Assistant landscape until a few months into 2026.
The technology giant did not provide an exact schedule, nor did it provide a definite reason for the delay. Instead, they simply said that the delay would help provide a “seamless transition” experience. It’s likely that the Gemini experience still needs tweaking before it rolls out to every Android user, and that’s the main reason behind the delay in the final transition date.
It’s worth noting that this delay relates to mobile platforms, including your Android smartphone, your WearOS watch, and compatible earbuds. This shift has no impact on Gemini for Google Home devices, which remain in a separate line.
